The Big 1-0
Since joining Rotary last year, I have discovered a very important fact: Rotarians never rest. Various committees are busy all year long, planning and executing local and international projects of all sizes, from the student exchange program to the wildly popular brunches in support of Food 4 Kids.
But nothing matches the effort and level of commitment that goes into the biggest local festival of the year, which brings the community together on Canada Day weekend.
And this year promises to be extra special, because Waterdown's Oh Canada Ribfest is turning 10!
When the planning for the original Ribfest launched in 2009, the local Rotary clubs knew the combination of world-class ribbers, rides, family activities, live music and local vendors would be a hit. But they couldn't have anticipated the terrific response the annual festival would receive. Literally, tens of thousands of people come through the gates each year, ready to celebrate Canada's birthday.
That's why the Ribfest organizing committee has been meeting since early January to plan the biggest festival yet, to mark the 10th instalment of Waterdown's biggest community event. Sponsors are already coming on board, vendors and bands have been signing up and the family fun zone activities are being planned. With all of the old favourites, and a few surprises, you won't want to miss all the fun this Canada Day weekend -– I know I don't.
